Brief History
St. Andrew Day School was founded in September 1972. It was the vision of Pastor
Robert Thomas, along with Joan and Bob Holloway, to reach out to the community and
offer a quality pre-school and day care program. No other organization in the township
offered a day care program. St. Andrew was the first.
Pastor Thomas approached Paula Tomchak, who at that time, was teaching a nursery
school class in the North Hills. With a degree in Early Childhood Education, Paula was
hired to develop and organize a pre-school and day care program. She was the Director
and also taught the four-year-old children. Pam Boustead was hired to teach the 3 year
old children with Audrey Longerman and Leah Svat were teacher aids.
Paula Tomchak: resigned in July 1975 and was replaced as Director by Joanne Thomas.
Because of job relocation, Joanne resigned in December 1975.
With the resignation of Joanne, the job title of Director/teacher was changed to
Director/Supervisor/Treasurer. This position was offered to Audrey Longerman who
accepted. Audrey served as Director from January 1975 until August 1987. The St.
Andrew Day School achieved the highest kindergarten score in the Moon Area School
District in the 1983 - 1984 school year.
In August 1987 the Day School was licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare
which required educational credentials, physicals for staff and students, training in CPR
and the American Red Cross multi-media first aid course. Ellen Heriger was named
Director for the 1987-1988 school year. She held this position until September 1996.
Karen Drnach accepted the position of Day School Director for the 1996-1997
school year. She remained the director until 2014. Since 2014 Pastor Larry F. Mort has acted as Director of the Day School, and Ms. Jessica Ohr has served as Lead Teacher/Supervising Director. Mrs. Marlane McGinnis is the Bookkeeper and Judy Brant is the Office Manager. Current enrollment is over 90 children in six classes, ages 2 through Pre-k.
